こんにちは！ アメリカ出身のLuisです。
すでにご存じの方もおられると思いますが、日本に来て8年、アップルｋで英会話を教えだして3年になります。
今回は、私の故郷、「デトロイト」を紹介したいと思います。
デトロイトの人々は、文化と歴史があるデトロイトを大変誇りに思っています。
大阪が「くいだおれの街」と呼ばれるように、デトロイトはアメリカの自動車産業が集まっている為、「車の街/the Motor City」と呼ばれています。
アメリカの三大自動車メーカー、「GM」、「フォード」、「クライスラー」の全てが、デトロイトに本社を構えています。
デトロイトでは、創業者ヘンリー・フォードの数々の功績により、フォード社が最も有名と言えるでしょう。
その中で、最も称賛されている事は、1）組み立てのライン 2）T型フォード の存在です。
デトロイトには、「ヘンリー・フォード博物館」があるほど、ヘンリー・フォードは偉人として扱われています。
ヘンリー・フォード博物館は、是非行っていただきたい、おススメの観光地です。
私自身も、デトロイトに住んでいた時、何回か行った事があります。
色んなタイプの車を見る事ができるだけはなく、車や、アメリカの歴史等、幅広く知る事が出来ます。
また、この博物館は大変広く、1日で見て回るのは難しいかもしれません。
博物館には、屋内、屋外のエリアがあり、屋内の施設には自動車が展示されています。屋外には、自動車工場に関する事や、歴史に関わる事が展示されています。
車好きの私には、たまらないクラシックカーや、自動車が展示されているだけは無く、展示されている車の数の多さは衝撃的でした。
歴代の大統領が使用した、専用車両や、かの有名なケネディー、レーガン、アイゼンハワー等が実際に使用した大統領用のリムジンも見る事が出来ます。
また、人種差別や、平等な権利を求めて立ち上がった、モンゴメリー・バス・ボイコット事件（*1）へと繋がったローザ・パークスが実際に座っていたバスに、座ることもできます。
この事件は、1960年代のアメリカにおける、公民権運動のきっかけになったものです。
オバマ元大統領がそのバスに座っている写真も残っています。
もう一つ、オススメの観光地は、フォード自動車工場のツアーです。
歴史を知る事も出来ますが、自動車が出来上がる過程を見る事が出来ます。
アメリカに旅行に行くとすれば、デトロイトは、有名な街ではありませんが、車が好きな方、アメリカの歴史を知りたい方には、オススメの街であることは間違いありません！
（*1）アラバマ州モンゴメリーで起きた、人種差別への抗議運動。
その時代、アメリカでは白人優先主義の為、公共のバスで白人と黒人の席が別れていた。
ローザ・パークスは、バス車両内の白人優先座席に座っていた事を、運転手に注意されたが、それに従わず、その席に座り続けた為、逮捕されることになる。
ローザ・パークスの逮捕をきっかけに、バスの利用をボイコットする運動が広がり、多くの賛同を得た。バスを利用していた多くが黒人という事もあり、市バス事業は大きな打撃を受け、連邦最高裁判所は、モンゴメリーの人種隔離政策を違法とする判決を下した。

Hi! My name is Luis.
Some of you may already know me but I’ve been a teacher at AppleK for about three years now. I’ve also been living in Japan for about eight years now. I’m from the United States. Today, I’d really like to introduce you to my hometown. My hometown in the US is Detroit.
People in Detroit are very proud of their city because the city has a lot of culture and history.
The same way that Osaka is called “KUIDAORE no MACHI”, the nickname of Detroit is “the Motor City”.
Why is it called “the Motor City?” Well, that is because Detroit is home to the American automobile industry.
There are three big American car companies. All of them are in Detroit: GM, Ford, and Chrysler.
Ford may be the most famous in Detroit due to its founder: Henry Ford. There are two things that Henry Ford is most famous for: the assembly line and the Model T car.
Henry Ford was so important and so famous in the city. For that reason, there is a museum in Detroit dedicated to him. It is called, “The Henry Ford Museum.” It is a very interesting and fun place. And I also really recommend it as a sightseeing place. I had lived in Detroit all of my life before moving to Japan, so I had a chance to visit the museum a few times.
You can experience many things at the museum. You can see different types of cars as well as learn about the history of those cars and also of America itself. The area of the museum is very large so it may be difficult to see everything in the museum in a day.
There is an outdoor as well as indoor area of the museum. The indoor area is where all of the cars and motor vehicles are kept and the outdoor area is where the factory as well as historical exhibits are kept.
I really like cars a lot, so I prefer the indoor area. I was amazed by the number of historic cars and motor vehicles that are inside the museum. There are a lot!
You can discover the history of the presidential motorcade. You can see some of the presidential limousines used by such famous American presidents as Kennedy, Reagan, Eisenhower, etc.
You can also sit in the same bus that Rosa Parks sat in order to stand-up against discrimination and for equal rights.
This act helped to start the civil rights movement in America of the 1960s. Here is a picture of former US president Barack Obama sitting in the same bus:
Another sightseeing spot is the Ford automotive factory tour. In the tour you can learn about the history of as well as see how cars are made from start to finish.
My hometown Detroit may not be the most famous city for sightseeing in America but if you like cars and want to learn more about American history, I really recommend that you go and visit Detroit!
